Abortion Rights are Human Rights

An Official Statement on Recent Events

A recently leaked draft of a United States Supreme Court majority opinion indicates that the Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. As a media organization that creates space for underrepresented voices, we at Loudspeaker find the content of this draft decision unconscionable and condemn it in the strongest possible terms. If this decision is made final, it will begin a sweeping removal of human rights for not only women and people with uteruses, but for every marginalized group in American society.

No court, politician, or legislative body can ban abortion; they can only ban safe abortion. The ability to choose to carry or not carry a child is a deeply personal choice and a fundamental human right, and should not be limited to only wealthy people who can afford to travel for abortion care. Removing widespread abortion access is an assault on the underprivileged and the disenfranchised, and make no mistake: This isn’t about morality or religion, or “the sanctity of life;” it’s about power and control. Conservatives can try to spin the issue all they want; it won’t change the fundamental truth that they believe that they – and they alone – should dictate how people live their lives.

This position is the equivalent of male Christian supremacism and it is wrong. If we as a society allow this to stand, it won’t stop here. The reversal of Roe v. Wade has the potential to undo decades of progress not only for women, but for the LGBTQIA community, people with disabilities, and people in poverty. This decision will become a crucial turning point for the United States that will only further restrict the rights of the already marginalized, and it must be stopped.

If you’re able to donate, please give to any of the local organizations doing work in your community to fight for abortion rights. Call your representatives. Make your voice heard. If they come for one of us, they come for all of us.

Together, we can make a difference and preserve human rights for everyone.
